Bead Lounge is happy to feature Katy as our Artist of the
Month.
We are your local gallery source for the luminously beautiful
ceramic works of Katy Diver.
Her work is filled with the wonder, energy and enthusiasm
of a child's eye and heart, created with the abilities of a skillfull adult.
Her joy in color and line shows in each piece, along with
her own warmth and sense of humor.
Katy grew up in the Hudson River Valley, in a home filled with books
and a community abounding with artists, musicians and circus performers.
When in her twenties, she traveled through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan
and India, which deeply influenced her life and her art.
She has been working with clay professionally for over twenty years,
and studied at the Art Student's League in New York City, Penland School
of Arts and Crafts, and Anderson Ranch.
Her work is exhibited in many galleries, including Middle Fish in Boulder,
Colorado, Appalachiana in Virginia, and the Klay Gallery in New York. As
a member of the Longmont Studio Tour and East
Boulder County Artists, Katy is busy both as a local artisan and organizer
and also shows her work from her studio by appointment all year round.
Katy says:
"I love clay! Its flexibility and responsiveness,
its weight and presence inspire me. It is a miraculous medium that allows
me to have a conversation between my inner landscape and the earthy, sensuous
material. In that dialogue, images come to me from the crevices and shapes
within the clay itself.
I carve and sculpt those images into forms that speak
to me, some whimsical, some more contemplative. And when fired, the clay
can hold those images for thousands of years.
Most recently I have been working on a series of bas-relief
wall plaques, inspired by Russian fairy tales, mystical poetry and the
beauty of the natural world. Once fired, I apply inks and metallic paints
to create free-flowing designs. And one of my great joys is creating garden
art that allows my sculptures to live outside as part of the natural world.
These sculptures are weather-resistant and can be enjoyed in the snow or
surrounded by flowers. Many include mosaic elements and some are designed
as working fountains. I invite you to contact me if you would like to see
any of my current work. I also create custom pieces by commission."
